Eminem’s reign atop the Billboard album charts has come to an end thanks to Katy Perry and a former "American Idol" winner.
Perry’s newest disc, “Teenage Dream,” debuted at No .1 on the Billboard 200, moving 192,000 copies in its opening week. Her second release on Capitol Records, the title track for “Teenage Dream,” tops out the Digital Songs chart.
Not since Ke$ha's track “Animal" sat atop the list for a week in January has a solo female artist laid claim to the top spot.
Perry's staying power has become more evident with her rise in sales. The 25-year-old singer's 2008 record, “One of the Boys,” opened and peaked at No. 9, with only 47,000 units sold in the first week.
Following behind Perry with 117,000 copies sold is Fantasia. Despite (or maybe because of) the controversy surrounding her recent affair with a married man, Fantasia’s “Back to Me” ranks as her highest-charted album to date. Fantasia’s debut album, “Free Yourself,” topped out at No. 8, while her sophomore effort, “Fantasia,” came in at No. 19.
Meanwhile, former king of the charts – at least for the last few weeks – Eminem saw his album “Recovery” move down to No. 3.
